Soot and the tars from burning wood can build up in it and eventually ignite causing a chimney fire.
Having it cleaned and inspected at least once a year is a really good thing to do. Have it done right after the season or right before the season begins.

Fire Departments Help Get the Message Out

According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than six thousand false fire alarms
occur in the United States each day...and the number is increasing.
Local Fire Departments are succeeding in getting the message out through public service announements (PSA's). A 60 second PSA was posted online last February and fire departments throughout the country have participated in getting it aired. View it here.
